What's new about curbside recycling in Arcata and Eureka?

Now you only have to sort materials into two categories: paper and containers. The materials will be processed at the Arcata and Eureka Community Recycling Centers' new materials recovery facility in Samoa. In Eureka, a $2.84 fee will apply. (Contact Eureka City Garbage at 442-5711 to sign up.) In Arcata, this new curbside recycling service is free for residential Arcata Garbage customers within the Arcata city limits or $5.12/month for those outside city limits. What is dual stream (or 2 stream) recycling?

This is a method of recycling that makes it possible for people to sort recyclable materials into two categories (or streams) for pickup at the curb. These two categories of mixed materials are containers and fibers (paper products). These enter the recycling sorting facility in Samoa and are separated by material type (i.e. newspaper, cardboard, aluminum cans, etc.) by various methods including magnets, blowers, and people power. Is dual stream curbside recycling free?

It depends.  Yes, if you are a single family residential customer within in the city limits of Arcata who subscribes for weekly garbage pickup service with Arcata Garbage Company. If you are a customer outside the Arcata city limits, it will cost you $5.12 per month.  In Eureka, a $2.84 fee also applies for City Garbage customers.
How do I sign up for dual stream curbside recycling?

In Eureka, Call City Garbage at 442-5711.  In Arcata, call Arcata Garbage Company at 822-0304.

Both types of materials will be picked up on your designated garbage day.
How do I sort my materials for dual stream curbside recycling?

Sort into containers and paper. 
Containers include:
-Aluminum, tin, steel, and bimetal cans
-Glass jars and bottles (all colors)
-Aluminum foil and formed containers
-#1-#7 plastic bottles and food containers
-Do NOT include plastic bags or plastic that did not contain food or a beverage
-Please do NOT package your recyclables in a plastic bag

Paper Products (fibers) include:
-Home and office paper (office pack)
-Newspaper
-Magazines and catalogs
-Cardboard, chipboard, and paper bags
-Junk mail, envelopes, and folders
-Phonebooks and paper-back books
-Gift wrap (non-foil only)
-Please do NOT include waxed milk cartons, aseptics (soymilk or juice boxes), paper towels, napkins, tissues, paper plates or cups, photographs, overhead transparencies, wax paper, padded envelopes, paper ream wrappers, hardcover books, neon or Astrobrite colored paper

Yes. Operations at these sites will remain the same.
What do I do with my other recyclables that are not accepted at the curb?

The Arcata or Eureka Community Recycling Centers will continue to accept all materials that you can recycle curbside, as well as a wide variety of additional materials that are not accepted in curbside recycling. These include: plastic bags, hardcover books, motor oil, antifreeze, batteries, packing materials (padded enveloped, bubblewrap, packing peanuts), CDs, electronic waste, appliances, printer cartridges, vegetable oil, and sharps.
